One of the most experienced and qualified bookkeepers in East Grinstead, Lisa de Haas, answers common questions about bookkeepers and bookkeeping.
The questions people ask about the result.
You should have both. A bookkeeper is detail oriented: I keep the day-to-day books right. An accountant takes the overall view and is your tax adviser. I prepare everything so your accountant can finalize the annual accounts.
Annual reports →Yes. I have excelled in straightening out messy accounts. Call me and we can talk.

Over £20,000: from 6 April 2028. I keep the digital records and send the quarterly updates to HMRC as part of my MTD IT service. Not sure if it applies to you? Take the Clear Books Check.
MTD IT →The questions people ask when they have been let down before.
With me. One bookkeeper, you deal with me, not a team. Call me on 07729 524611. I get back to you within 48 hours, and if I miss your call, leave your name and number and I will ring you back within 48 hours.
Apply to work with Lisa →Read what my clients say in their own words. I have been in bookkeeping since 1977, in East Grinstead since 2005, and I am a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers. My practice number is 24615.
Reviews →Yes. There are controls built into my procedures to make sure everything is correct, and every transaction is reconciled, so you can be sure the data is 100% accurate. Then you get reports, monthly, quarterly or annual, depending on how much control you want.
General bookkeeping →Software records what you put in. It does not tell you whether it is right. I check that every transaction is reconciled, and I explain what the numbers actually mean, so you can make decisions from them. I work in QuickBooks Online.
General bookkeeping →The questions people ask about the wait.
We talk, and we arrange a meeting so we can discuss what is needed and what you want. A price is quoted once we have agreed what the job is, and before we start.
Apply to work with Lisa →Two minutes. Seven questions, a score out of 7 and your weakest spots in plain English.
Take the Clear Books Check →You get your summary back in about 14 days, if you qualify. I reply to every message within 48 hours.
About the free review →The questions people ask about time and money.
A standard fixed monthly fee, based on an agreed contract, set by the services requested and the size of the job. We talk first, and I quote a price once we have agreed what you need. You know the price before we start. The notice period is 30 days.
How I price →Either. I ask roughly how many bank and card transactions you have each month so I know what I am looking at. The number does not rule you out.
Apply to work with Lisa →Not much. You send me your documents, Dext Prepare captures them, and I do the rest in QuickBooks Online. That leaves you free to run your business.
General bookkeeping →No. VAT returns are quarterly reports to HMRC based on the general bookkeeping, and I prepare them. If you have subcontractors in the construction industry, CIS is a monthly report to HMRC.
VAT returns →No. You do not lose your books. You have joint access to your accounting software (QuickBooks, for example), so the books stay available to you. The notice period is 30 days.
General bookkeeping →I work exclusively with QuickBooks Online, and use Dext Prepare for document capturing.
General bookkeeping →Yes, in plain words. Accounting is simple: you have income, you have expenses, and you have a bank or card account, and accounting is recording all of them. The words are the hard part, so I leave the jargon out.
Apply to work with Lisa →Other tailor-made bookkeeping services can be considered and delivered.
Tell me what you need →Yes. It takes two minutes, and there is nothing to download or sign.
Take the Clear Books Check →You see your score and your weakest spots. If you would like me to look, you can book a free review, and I reply within 48 hours.
Take the Clear Books Check →Lisa gets a login to look at your QuickBooks or Xero. She can only look. She cannot change anything.
About the free review →The free review also works with Xero. If you use something else, a free consultation is still the right first step.
Apply to work with Lisa →The process of recording a company’s financial transactions in appropriate records and of summarising this information in the form of accounting reports.
